Private Secure Data Transfer Platform

A personal project exploring secure, private data transfers using encrypted tunnels and controlled access.

The problem

"Sharing files between machines on different networks usually means trusting a third party with your data or exposing a service to the open internet."

The hard part

Designing a transfer flow that never opens an inbound port — Cloudflare Tunnel + SSH key gating + per-session ephemeral credentials, so the attack surface is a moving target instead of a public address.

Overview

This personal project was built to explore secure data transfer mechanisms and private data ownership outside of traditional cloud storage models. The goal was to design a system where data could be transferred securely between machines without exposing services directly to the public internet.

The project served as a hands-on exploration of networking fundamentals, encrypted tunnels, and access-controlled data flows.

Problem

Most file-sharing and data transfer solutions rely heavily on centralized cloud services. While convenient, this often comes at the cost of reduced control over data ownership and increased exposure to external attack surfaces.

The primary challenges were:

  • Enabling secure data transfers without public-facing services
  • Ensuring encrypted communication channels
  • Maintaining clear access boundaries
  • Supporting reliable transfers for larger payloads

Constraints

  • Services should not require open inbound ports
  • Data transfers needed to be encrypted end-to-end
  • The system should remain simple and understandable
  • The solution should prioritize learning and correctness over scale

Solution

The platform was designed around private, encrypted tunnels to facilitate secure communication between systems.

Key design decisions included:

  • Using SSH-based encryption to secure data in transit
  • Leveraging Cloudflare Tunnel to avoid exposing services publicly
  • Implementing authentication and access control at the application level
  • Chunking large payloads to improve reliability during transfers

A lightweight web interface built with Next.js was used to manage and observe transfers, while the core logic focused on secure and predictable data movement.

Architecture

  • Backend & UI: Node.js with TypeScript and Next.js
  • Security: SSH-based encrypted tunnels
  • Networking: Cloudflare Tunnel
  • Data Handling: Chunked data transfer for reliability

The architecture emphasized:

  • Minimal attack surface
  • Clear trust boundaries
  • Explicit control over data flow

Trade-offs

  • Tunnel-based networking added operational complexity
  • Transfer speeds were secondary to security guarantees
  • The system was not optimized for large-scale usage

These trade-offs were acceptable given the project’s learning-focused goals.

Learnings

  • Encrypted tunnels are a powerful tool for reducing exposure
  • Networking fundamentals matter when building secure systems
  • Chunking improves reliability but increases coordination complexity
  • Private data ownership requires intentional architectural choices

This project strengthened my understanding of secure networking patterns and reinforced the importance of simplicity when designing security-sensitive systems.

Future Improvements

  • Automated key rotation for tunnels
  • Better visibility into transfer progress and failures
  • Optional integrity verification for transferred data
